This blog doesn’t have a real direction or purpose other than it being a place for me to lay down some thoughts and ideas as I go through my life living in China.

I’m from Michigan. I miss bagels and good beer.

I studied Japanese in uni and thus began my love of studying languages.

I first came to China in ‘04 for a couple weeks of travel and I haven’t been able to get it out of my mind since. I’ve since spent a summer traveling China, about 2 years in Nanjing and relocated to Shanghai in early ‘09. Not sure where this love affair will take me but hell, that was never the point anyway, right?

I’m also on twitter and you can follow me here.

I divide my time between studying Chinese, talking, dinner, beers,  reading, and wishing I was on a motorcycle.

Was trying to look for your email address but cant find it. Hope you dont mind i wrote a comment here instead (please do delete this if inappropriate)

I would like to suggest a website to you and hope your members/readers will find it useful too. ECpod.com is a free website to learn English and Chinese (Mandarin, Cantonese and etc) using videos. These videos are produced by our members. They can make friends too within our community and find online students to teach.

Do take a look and let me know what you think.

A nice song by Richie Ren that I would like to present to you on ECpod
(can learn some mandarin from this song too):

Sorry if you find the site slow now – it will be resolved in 2 weeks time
after we increase our overseas bandwidth. Thanks.

  4. Interesting blog. I live in the Midwest now, but it’s only one of many places I’ve resided. I’ve traveled to China and Japan several times, and I’ve recently started blogging about some of my travels at http://damiandaily.wordpress.com/. Best of luck in your adventures!

  5. Hi there!

I think it’s great that you are learning Chinese. I assume that you are learning to speak Mandarin? My family is from Hong Kong so unfortunately my Mandarin is non-existent but I can speak conversation-level Cantonese. I don’t interact with many Chinese people except for my parents anymore so it always takes a little while for me to pick things up again. Keep up the good work and don’t be embarrassed to buy those 4th grade level books! As they say, practice makes perfect…

    Take care,
    Samantha

  6. Hey,

I really enjoy reading your blog, stumbled upon it while reading Lost Laowai. I’m looking forward to teach English in Liuzhou, Guangxi for a year in September and of course am learning some Chinese too. Keep it up,

    Markus

  7. Hey, love the blog.
Wanted to suggest a site to you. Check it out and see if you like, maybe worth writing up.

    TheChineseReader™ : http://www.thechinesereader.com

Would have emailed you, but couldn’t find it. Sorry if this is unwanted.
    Cheers,
    Adam

  8. Nice Blog. Self study is definitely the way to go! You don’t need classes when you are immersed in the Middle Kingdom. I’m here in Chicago enjoying my fair share of the cold.

  9. Jason, enjoying the blog. I SO identify with the language struggles and (small) victories. Here in Liuzhou there are some local dialects that totally confuse me!

    Keep in touch!

    Michael

  10. I’ve found it interesting to read about Chinese life in your weblog.

I myself have just recently started a blog. In this weblog I am writing about my experiences in learning Chinese:

I was wondering if you would do me a favor and link this page on your website. I’m happy to link your blog on my website.

    Philip

PS: Sorry, I couldn’t find an email address on your website…

  11. Motorcycle huh? I am actually thinking of buying one and riding it from Qingdao to Kunming this summer. Oh yeah!
