On this page I’ll try to maintain links and directions to any tools and resources associated with studying Chinese found online that I use and recommend. There’s a lot of good stuff out there, but I don’t know it all. If you’ve got anything you know of or would like to recommend, let me know in the comments and I’ll put it up.

  • nciku: Easily the best and most useful Chinese-English dictionary online. Enough said
  • Wenlin: Chinese langauge dictionary, etmology and translation software. Gotta pay for it, but it’s easily worth it.
  • Chinese Pera-Kun: A Firefox add-on that provides roll-over dictionary entries on Chinese characters/words.
  • Anki: A great flashcard program based on spaced repitition.
  • ZDT: A flashcard program for Chinese with a built in dictionary.
  • Pīnyīnput: An IME that allows for pīnyīn to be typed with tone marks.
  • Skritter: An application used for practicing writing Chinese characters.
  • Chinesepod: The O.G. of Chinese study podcasts.
  • Pop-up Chinese: Another Chinese study podcast service.

  2. Hi,
笔画, or ‘writing’ via stokes on the keys is available on all simple dictionaries, but I’m not sure about dictionary software for stylus type touch phones.
The only one I know of other than the iPhone’s is Pleco which is for windows.
